Traversing The Countryside

December 2007 Issue

We are pleased to include a special article this month on the Robert & Claudia Wheeler Family:

Here is what has been going on with us lately. October 5th was my last day working for ACS. I went to Symantec NetBackup 6.5 training on the 7th for one week in Springfield, Oregon. Then, I flew to New Jersey and stayed in a Super 8 Motel in Somerville for a week while I waited for my start date (which was Oct 22nd) with Symantec working at Citigroup in Warren New Jersey. I have a six month contract working with their residency program where I am assisting Symantec (formerly Veritas) with a NetBackup 6.5 migration project. The project involves building three new NetBackup 6.5 domains with one master and three media servers which will soon have multiple clients and SAN clients added in the next few months. Citigroup is the largest and most complex NetBackup installation worldwide and they do things a little differently than most companies, so there are many Symantec consultants and engineers working on this and other projects. I am doing a lot of documentation including MS Word, Excel, and Visio for diagrams, so I am learning a lot about these products as well. It is a great experience, but has been quite challenging.

I am also currently going to DeVry University (on-line) and will be done with my Bachelor’s of Science in Technical Management at the end of February 2008. This has also proved to be quite challenging as it is taking up quite a bit of my time and I am having to spend a great deal of time reading.

We were going to just have me stay out here with Claudia and the kids staying in Phoenix for the six months, but this has proved too difficult for our relationship and for the kids. They do much better with both parents in the home. I can see why being a single parent would be almost impossible.

I flew back to Phoenix on December 20th and spent the few days before Christmas with the family. On Friday, I had several people over from my former job (ACS) and we had a fun get together complete with Karaoke and food. Claudia made her own tamales this year as a test and is planning on doing it each year going forward. We had a nice Christmas Eve party dinner with Mom, Dad, us, Becky’s family, and Aunt Julie (she took all of these pictures). After the Gringos left (around 9 PM), the Latinos came by and we had another party until close to midnight. This has been our tradition for several years now. Then, we spent the day at Becky’s house eating a lot of food.

On December 25th, I flew back with Claudia and the kids on a very empty flight and we arrived back in New Jersey at around midnight. The next day, the kids spent most of the day running around outside, exploring all of the new surroundings. It’s cold, our house is extremely small, and everything is new here, but we are all very happy to be together as a family.

For the next four months, I will be working at Citigroup and will see where that leads me in the future. I am hoping to find a job back in Phoenix so that we can move back into our house and get out of the cold, but it all depends on what happens during the next few months.

This is what is going on with us right now. We are happy to have a place to stay and a job, even though we miss PHX and everyone.
